Crystal Ornaments

Grow your own crystal ornaments with this super fun science activity!

You’ll need: white pipe cleaners, string, scissors, a wide mouth jar, 1 cup of water and borax

Instructions:

1. Create a shape out of pipe cleaners that will be your ornament. It could be your initial, a snowflake, anything you like! Be sure that the shape is small enough to be suspended in your wide mouth jar without it touching the jar’s sides.
2. Bring your cup of water to a boil. Once it’s removed from the heat, add in 3 tablespoons of borax and stir until it dissolves. Pour the mixture into the jar.
3. Tie a string to your ornament and hang it from another pipe cleaner or a pencil, something that can rest on the rim of the jar as the ornament suspends in the mixture.
4. Leave your ornament suspended in the jar for 6 hours and then pull it out to see your amazing crystallized ornament!
