DESCRIPTION:This Black History Month\, we are celebrating the women quilters of Gee’s Bend as our featured artists of the month. What began as a way to keep their families warm in a small Alabama community grew into a powerful art tradition known for bold patterns and beautiful designs. Their quilts are now celebrated as masterpieces and have been shown in major museums—and even featured on U.S. postage stamps. Look for quilt-inspired MakerSpace activities throughout February. \nQuilt patterns are made by repeating shapes like squares\, triangles\, and diamonds\, which is a fun way to use math in art. The Gee’s Bend quilters used these geometric patterns to tell stories\, show creativity\, and turn everyday materials into beautiful designs. By arranging shapes in different ways\, they created quilts that are both works of art and examples of how math can be used to make something meaningful and unique.

DESCRIPTION:Nothing says kids’ crafts like the good ol’ popsicle stick—always a favorite here at the CME! This time\, we’re taking it up a notch: kids can paint and customize their backdrop\, jazz it up with sequins\, gems\, and buttons\, and finish it off with a foam heart as the centerpiece. Voila—a colorful\, sparkly creation all their own!

DESCRIPTION:Tinkerdoodle workshops are all about letting kids take the lead. We set out a variety of materials and then step back\, giving children the time and freedom to explore\, experiment\, and create in their own way. There’s no right or wrong—just kid-directed discovery. That kind of open-ended play is incredibly powerful and helps build confidence\, creativity\, and independence. \nCreate a wintry wreath in Monday’s using twigs\, stars\, and snowflakes—so peaceful you can almost hear the hush of a snow-laden woods. We’ll have ribbon\, metallic accents\, and “snow-drenched” shapes for kids to layer\, build\, and explore in three dimensions as they design their own seasonal masterpiece. \n

Well… not that kind. We’ll cut and fold paper to make a simple\, freestanding scene while exploring how backgrounds and foregrounds work—and how size can make all the difference in a finished piece. This one’s a Tinkerdoodle\, so we take a backseat and let the kids lead the way\, experimenting\, building\, and creating their own little worlds. \n

That kind of open-ended play is incredibly powerful and helps build confidence\, creativity\, and independence. \nOur Black History Month art project shines a spotlight on the Gee’s Bend quilters as our featured artists of the month. Inspired by the vibrant\, story-filled quilts created by these remarkable women in Alabama\, children will design their own quilt squares using real fabric—mixing colors\, patterns\, and imagination. On Thursday\, make one square to take home and one to leave with us\, and together we’ll piece them into a community quilt to proudly hang at the Museum. \n
